3gppNode-H has integrated its 3GPP femtocell protocol software on the Percello PRC6000 femtocell SoC (System on a Chip) and shown eight calls running simultaneously. This is the first time that Super-Femtocell performance has been achieved on the PRC6000 using a protocol stack from an independent software vendor.

The Node-H protocol software has been designed especially for the embedded systems challenge of femtocells. "Node-H's skills come from the handset space. We've taken the same design principles for portability, optimization and testing strategy that are necessary in handsets, and applied them to the femtocell," said Mike Cronin, CEO of Node-H. "We designed the software to an abstract layer 1 interface which we could test against. Porting the pre-tested software to the actual chipset went very quickly."

Femtocell manufacturers are under pressure from operators to speed up the roll-out of low-cost femtocells. Silicon and pre-integrated software allows them to accelerate their time-to-market. Specialized software companies like Node-H allow new entrants to enter the femtocell space more easily.

Node-H will be demonstrating its technology later this month at the Femtocells World Summit in London, the main femtocell show of the year. The Summit is endorsed by the Femto Forum which promotes the adoption of femtocell technologies through open standards, market education and ecosystem development.

A femtocell is a tiny cellular access point, suitable for the home or office. It connects to the operator's network through a broadband connection. The operator can offer improved coverage and capacity indoors. Consumers will benefit from excellent mobile coverage indoors, additional services and bandwidth as though they had the whole network to themselves.
