The National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative (NRTC) announced today that it had completed an agreement with PowerSecure International’s EnergyLite division to distribute the company’s LED area lighting solution. The energy-efficient solution called SecureLite, uses significantly less energy, lasts longer and reduces maintenance costs compared to traditional high-intensity discharge (HID) area lighting.

“Area lighting is a huge expense for rural electric cooperatives, both in terms of energy usage and the resources required to maintain the numerous lamps on any given distribution system,” said NRTC Vice President of Utility Solutions Ed Drew. “SecureLite was designed with electric cooperatives in mind, and it will allow our members to reduce costs, streamline operations and help the environment—all while delivering great quality lighting.”

Typically, cooperatives using SecureLite can expect a 67 percent reduction in energy usage compared to a traditional high-pressure sodium (HPS) area lights, and a lifespan three times that of HPS lighting. In addition, EnergyLite designed SecureLite to provide high-quality, uniform light that enhances visibility, security and minimizes light pollution. SecureLite is a Dark Sky compliant technology. SecureLite’s highly efficient design includes its breakthrough proprietary dusk-to-dawn control technology, which maximizes the light’s efficiency and reliability, while reducing maintenance costs.

“We are excited about our new relationship with NRTC and its electric cooperative members,” said PowerSecure CEO Sidney Hinton. “Utilities that have installed SecureLite continue to provide us with positive feedback, telling us that we’ve hit the mark with SecureLite. We’re confident that NRTC’s members will benefit from the product’s returns on investment, in terms of energy usage, maintenance costs and quality of light. We look forward to working with NRTC and its members, and we’ll look to provide them with additional LED lighting products in the future.”

SecureLite LED area lighting is just one the many smart grid solutions NRTC provides to its electric cooperative members. Other smart grid products and services available through NRTC include supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), geographic information systems (GIS), workforce management (WFM), automatic vehicle location (AVL) solutions and radio technology, spectrum and infrastructure services.
