A recent IDC Energy Insights report ranks Landis+Gyr as the only company in the market leader category for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) technology used by utilities for advanced metering and smart grid applications.

"The IDC MarketScape:North American AMI Communication Network 2011 Vendor Assessment" report (Document # EI227555), issued this month, used quantitative and qualitative assessments to evaluate seven different providers and communication solutions being adopted by North American utilities. The report ranked Landis+Gyr and the Gridstream™ RF network solution as a market leader in the category. Landis+Gyr scored high for both current capabilities as well as future strategies for delivering what utilities will need in the next three to five years.

According to the report, "Landis+Gyr's strengths in this assessment include leading standards support for robust interoperability capabilities, strong security and encryption technology, an advanced product road map featuring increased scale and latency capabilities, and flexible managed service offerings."

"First and foremost, an AMI communication network solution needs to work seamlessly with the smart meters attached to it. However, the network's integration and interoperability capabilities allow it to act as a gateway for future innovation," wrote Marcus Torchia, research manager for IDC Energy Insights' Intelligent Grid Strategies research advisory service.

Vendor performance was ranked against a broad set of strategic, go-to-market, product-offer and business criteria.  The report cited scalability, integration and interoperability, and customer service as a few of the more important capabilities to consider in an AMI communication network solution.

"This report is a unique look at the factors utilities rate highly in working with a smart grid technology provider. IDC's assessment confirms Landis+Gyr's focus on delivering proven technology, while providing flexible business options and enhanced smart grid benefits through partners and integration capabilities," said Jerry Figurilli, Chief Operating Officer at Landis+Gyr. "It's not just about technology, but also about delivery, execution and long-term support."

The Gridstream RF network is a secure smart grid solution that serves as a platform for advanced metering, distribution automation and home area network applications. It uses a powerful radio mesh network to communicate with meters, in-premise devices and distribution network equipment. The solution uses broadly adopted standards, such as the Smart Energy Profile, to extend communication to smart appliances, thermostats and energy monitors. This technology is currently being deployed to millions of residential and commercial sites across North America.
