Netflix Video-on-Demand Service Launches In The UK

netflixUS based Video-on-Demand provider Netflix has launched its VOD subscription service in the UK and Ireland. For has little has GB£ 5.99 (US$ 9.25) in the UK and €6.99 in Ireland, subscribers get instant and unlimited access to a broad range of films and TV programmes. Partners for the service include Sony, Viacom, BBC, Disney UK and Ireland, Channel4’s 4oD, Lionsgate UK and many more.

With over 2bn hours of content streamed in the last quarter of 2011, they are hoping to replicate their success here in the UK.  However, they will be up against Amazon’s Lovefilm who offers a similar Internet video service and has about 2 million European subscribers.

 The Netflix service is currently available on connected TVs, PCs/Macs, Android and Apple-based smartphones and tablets, all three major games consoles (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii), selected LG Home Theater System and Blu-ray players, smart TV adaptors from Philips, Roku and Western Digital. The subscription service will stream TV shows and movies on devices with high-speed Internet connections.

 Films and TV programmes available immediately include  previous full seasons of UK favourites including The Only Way is Essex, Top Gear, The Inbetweeners and Torchwood; recent big screen hits such as The Expendables and Paul Blart: Mall Cop top US programmes such as 24 and a wide-range of documentaries.
