India’s Bharti Airtel has selected Dolby Digital Plus as the surround sound format for its new HD Direct-to-Home service and set-top boxes. According to Dobly Laboratories, Bharti Airtel chose their audio format as part of their plans to offer customers HD content with up to 7.1 channels of surround sound.

Dolby Digital Plus is a next generation sound technology system and is used by entertainment system suppliers around the world. Dolby Digital Plus is also in Windows 7 – the latest windows desktop operation system.

"Innovative technology that adds value to customer experiences is a vital element of our brand endeavors. HD is usually about visual appeal, but our consumer insight says that TV is as much an audio medium as it is visual. That is why we have invested in being the first to bring to India the Dolby Digital Plus sound experience in HD set-top boxes”, said Ajai Puri, Director and CEO, DTH, Bharti Airtel.

By using Dolby Digital Plus in its set-top box solution, Bharti Airtel is hoping to take its customers to the next level of sound technology.  By "using Dolby Digital Plus as the audio format for its infrastructure, Airtel can efficiently deliver a premium HD audio experience by satellite to its customers," said Dolby.
