National Grid is to increase its smart meter roll-out in the Worcester, Massachusetts from 5,000 to 15,000. National Grid said they will start deploying the additional 10000 meter early this year.  To support the project they have assembled some of the biggest names in smart meter and smart grid sector to implement the latest technology solutions. National Grid said the smart grid pilot will evaluate the integration of home automation, dynamic pricing and distribution automation.

The city of Johannesburg has awarded a contract worth approximately $150million to Itron and Edison power group for the supply of smart meters and supporting technologies.  Itron will work with City Power to implement its latest smart meter solutions, allowing city Power’s customers to better manage their electricity and complements the city’s demand side management program.

Itron and National Grid announced today that they are collaborating on a project to build and evaluate an advanced smart grid in Massachusetts utilizing a new generation of standards-based network technology.

Itron announced today that it has released its first set of specialized analytic software applications built on the Active Smart Grid Analytics (ASA) platform. Each application is bundled with Itron’s Analytic Accelerators and Extension Toolkits, which help utilities take full advantage of their smart grid data.

This next-generation platform will help utilities accelerate adoption and simplify deployment of smart grid solutions, reduce the total cost of ownership of these systems, and unleash innovation for smart grid applications and technologies in the marketplace.

Trilliant has launched a smart metering interoperability group to support UK utilities with their smart meter roll-out.  According to Trilliant the group will offer utilities a clear low risk route for utilities to help consumers to cut their energy bills.  The interpretability group consist of eight industry players including in-home display providers and energy and water resource management solution provider.

Tropos Networks and Itron have announced that Avista has selected their jointly developed Smart Grid solution as part of the $38 million Smart Grid Demonstration Project in the city of Pullman, Washington, and the nearby community  of Albion. The goal of the project is to use smart technologies to automate part of the energy distribution system to increase system reliability and reduce outage time, incorporate renewable energy sources, and provide customers with more tools and information to monitor their energy usage.

DTE Energy, a energy provider to 2.1 million electric customers in Southeastern Michigan, has selected solutions from Itron and Tropos for its $168 million SmartCurrents program. SmartCurrents is DTE Energy’s first smart grid program and is targeted at modernizing the electric grid, improving distribution system reliability and efficiency, as well as empowering electric customers with more information about their power usage.
