Mexico's CFE Selected Silver Spring Networks For Smart Grid Project

meterIn 2013, approximately 15 per cent of Mexico's electricity production was lost due to theft or defaults, and in some areas of Mexico City, that increases to more than 35 per cent, that’s according to Mexico's Comisión Federal de Electricidad’s (CFE), the largest utility in the Americas. To reduce theft and stem its losses the CFE under the Megacable and Hola Innovacion consortium is working in partnership with Silver Spring Networks and Mexico's Tecnologías EOS to implement a number of smart grid solutions in Mexico City’s Central District.

Mexico and the World Smart Grid Market

The smart grid market is expected to be a major growth area over this decade to 2020, based on research done by Navigant Research.  In their report titled “Smart Grid Technologies”, they expect the smart grid market to worth $73 Billion in annual revenue by the year 2020 from today’s $13 Billion. Another interesting prediction is that Mexico smart grid market alone will worth about 10 per cent of world the world’s annual revenue.

Mexico Kicks Off Solar Project in Los Alamos

Officials are celebrating the groundbreaking of a two-megawatt solar array in Los Alamos that will be part of a smart grid collaboration between researchers in New Mexico and Japan.

Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization is teaming up with Los Alamos County and Los Alamos National Laboratory for the project at the county's capped landfill.

The Japanese group is also working on a related project in Albuquerque.
