For those living in the rural areas of the UK it must feel like forever that they have been asking for better internet connection and receiving empty promises. Thing seems to be Atheros today launches the industry’s first HomePlug Green PHY solutions development kit.  The M2M (machine-to-machine) communication development kit consists of a hardware platform based on existing HomePlug AV silicon. Connected home solutions providers will be able to develop new solutions that accurately emulate the HomePlug Green PHY environment and allow for the development of applications for the Atheros family of “Internet of Things” which includes smart grid and smart energy products.

The HomePlug Green PHY (HPGP) is a subset standard of the HomePlug AV powerline standard (which allows you to use your power socket as a network port). The Green PHY specification enables a low-power, low-energy and robust connectivity solution, while supporting data rates up to 10 Mbps for scalable IP connectivity.  The Atheros “Internet of Things” initiative incorporates these standards to encourage and stimulate the development of innovative solutions that enhances our lives.

The application development kit is the first in a series of products within the Atheros Internet of Things product portfolio, which includes wired and wireless technologies to enable scalable IP infrastructures for smart grid, smart home, security, building automation, remote health and wellness monitoring, and other machine-to-machine (M2M) applications. Products developed will by compatible with other products base on the HomePlug AV and IEEE 1901 standards.
