Onkyo Debuts First Nine-Channel Home Theater Receiver (TX-NR1009)

The Onkyo TX-NR1009 available from today is the first of the company’s line of AV Receivers to offer nine channel audio entertainment and to feature DTS Neo:X multidimensional audio technology. Now user can attach up to nine loudspeakers with distinct direction clues that enhance the height and space dimensions of a home theater room beyond the capabilities of current seven channel systems—creating a lifelike 3-D soundscape.

DLNA Releases New Interoperability Guidelines

As part of this week’s Connected Home Global Summit 2011 in London the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) is releasing a new Interoperability Guidelines for the playback of commercial media content. The new guideline will make it easier for residential customers to stream video content to in home devices such as DLNA certified Blu-ray disc players, connected TVs, game consoles and set-top boxes.

Netgear has announced the release of its N750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router (WNDR4000). At wireless data rate of up to 750 megabits per second (Mbps), the N750 powers through intense wireless tasks such as streaming HD video, multiplayer gaming and large file transfers. The N750 also acts as a DLNA Media Server for streaming video, music and photos from any storage device plugged into its USB port to DLNA-enabled.

The new 7.2 Channel TX-NR609 and 5.1 Channel TX-NR509 AV Receivers features the latest in networking capability available to home entertainment systems, although being class as entry-level.  The AV Receivers boost support for DLNA, Wireless, Windows 7, Internet Radio and remote App control from Onkyo App for iPhone and iPod. The other new model is the TX-SR309, it is the only one of the three that does not support Networking.

Qualcomm's Skifta for Android Receives DLNA Certification

Qualcomm’s recently release media shifting platform Skifta, has become the first software platform to be certified by the Digital Living Networking Alliance (DLNA) under its new software certification program.  Now, users with compatible DLNA devices can shift their contents to wherever they are more comfortable enjoying it. Skifta – beta currently available at the Android Marketplace as a free download for smartphones running Android version 2.2 and higher.

Qualcomm debuts Shifta, a media shifting service at CES 2011, one of the technologies we highlight would be debuting there. The Skifta service gives users the ability to control and play their music, photos and videos on connected devices at home, at a friend's house, at work or on any WiFi network without syncing or side loading media to the phone. It is also certified to stream digital content to DLNA certified devices.

The DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) is closing off the year on a high note after a busy 2010.  The Alliance has added three new companies to the existing 26 member in its promoter member group. With a new DLNA Lab in China, the Alliance is expanding it reach and expertise across sectors and geography. It now has members in different CE sectors such as service providers, consumer electronics and mobile device industries.

Broadcom is offering OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and reference design developers of connected home devices a new System-on-Chip (SoC) solution that offers superior speed and better integration. The new chip is called the BCM7422, and is the industry’s first SoC to combine a 1.3GHz multi-threaded MIPS with the latest MPEG industry standard scalable video coding (SVC) that allows STBs (set-top box) to offer 1080p high definition 3DTV.
